OMFG lost NaBloPoMo.. ALREADY!

I’m actually quite upset about this, because I’m still feeling crappy, congested and sick. (But littleQ isn’t sick, so that’s good!) But that’s no excuse! I’ve failed NaBloPoMo! :( … and only by like half an hour!

Woe is me…..

Now I’ve just got to make sure I get my novel to 50,000 words by the 30th, or else I’ll really feel like a failure 8O

NaNoWriMo 2007 - Day 6

Well, my story and its characters are slowly but surely taking form.  Maybe in a few days I’ll post an excerpt so that people can mercilessly critique my work in progress.

Saturday Night Karaoke fun

I am really so grateful that my parents are as generous as they are and are nice enough to babysit :-).

Last night two of cousins and I, the same ones who were with me when we met Tila, went to a Japanese restaurant that turns into a karaoke bar on Friday and Saturday nights from the hours of 10PM and 2AM. They advertise having over 17,000 songs to choose from, but that is no exaggeration on their part.

Apparently one of my cousins actually goes there quite often. She has an amazing voice, and has captivated the management, bartenders and bouncers so that not only did we get all of our drinks on the house, we also had our songs bumped up, hehe. Ooooh VIP treatment LOL.

photo_1356_20061030 I know, I know, you’re dying to know if I sang, and what song I sang. Well, first my cousin with the connections sang the Grease classic “Summer Loving” with the bartender. At this point, her sister and I still hadn’t worked up the courage to sing, but two Malibu bay breezes later, we relaxed and were pretty pumped to go. The three of us belted out our rendition of Lady Marmalade(Xtina, Pink, Mya, and Lil Kim version), complete with my cousin rapping Lil’ Kim’s part, and I sang “Total Eclipse of the Heart” (Old School style, of course… you’ll get it if you watched that movie, lol) with my cousins backing me up.

All in all it was a pretty entertaining evening. With the patrons’ song choices ranging from “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” to “Detachable Penis” to some song by P!nk to “Defying Gravity” from Wicked, as well as a few relatively bad obscure song choices, there really was a wide diversity of musical tastes in the crowd, and it was fun!

Now it’s back to the keyboard though… I’m so naughty I only wrote about 200 words yesterday :(… so I’ve got to catch up. NaNoWriMo is definitely not for the faint of heart… (or the LAZY, lol)

Getting creative! NaNoWriMo is starting to consume me

Well I’ve almost met my word count quota for the day.  I actually didn’t get much writing done today.  I wrote about 3,100 words yesterday, so I’ve only got 250 words to go.  Ach… I’ll catch up :)

In other news, it’s starting to get chilly here in NYC, and since it’s November 2, the Christmas commercials have started eating up airtime on every basic cable channel on TV.  I love Christmas, but I’m also not a little kid anymore.. it’s my turn to spend ridiculous amounts of money for everybody and their grandmas.  I haven’t been to Bloomie’s lately but I’m pretty sure every nook and cranny of every single location is covered with fake holly, berries and obnoxiously sparkly wreaths.  Don’t get me wrong though, at least Bloomie’s decorations aren’t overly tacky, and they do the job of getting me, and the however many millions of other shoppers there are, in the brotherly, gift-giving, money-spending mood of the season.

But at least for the rest of this month, my only focus aside from littleQ’s and mrQ’s health and happiness, will be my budding novel :)  Hey, if you’re lucky you might even get a chance to read it when it’s done hehe.

NaNoWriMo 2007 - it has begun!

Alrighty, I’m sitting here at my computer, and I’m determined to make good use of these hours in the middle of the night when I should be sleeping, but usually just don’t. At this point, I have one sentence down.

It is recommended that you break up the 50,000 word minimum equally over the thirty days of November: 1667 words per day. I think I can do this:: that’s equal to about 3 decent sized blog entries, or one relatively long entry. I can do this. Basically I’ve committed myself to letting my creative juices flow forth for at least 1667 words of super kick-butt fiction each day, plus at least one blog entry every day, as per NaBloPoMo. Yep, I can do this :)

Let the writing begin =P

NaNoWriMo’s Almost Here (BTW YouTube isn’t good for Insomniacs)

I am über excited for NaNoWriMo to start, but I have to confess that I haven’t really had a chance to really sit down and brainstorm.  I also missed the kick-off party for NYC NaNoWriMo-ers tonight (boo me).

Well, in the spirit of quantity over quality, I’ll just wing it most of the way ;)

Any last minute ideas or suggestions?  Hell, even if it doesn’t make sense I’ll MAKE IT work. =P

Did you ever just wake up all ornery and really unable to pinpoint what it is that was pissing you off so much?  That happened to me last night at about 12:45 AM.  I felt like punching something… but there was really nothing for me to do except force myself to go back to sleep.

Alas, I ended up wasting my time watching silly people, who are  hiding behind the excuse of “this is just for fun yo,” in their crappy-to-semi-mediocre performances on YouTube in a vain attempt to be the ‘net’s next big thing.  I mean, There are plenty of random people on there who are talented (as well as plenty of random videos that are stupid but still entertaining, depending on the mood you’re in), but unfortunately, we can’t all be like Chris Crocker.

Ideas for NaNoWriMo

I am really quite excited about participating in NaNoWriMo… but I know myself, and I know that I really should get started on something of an outline or at least a rough list of possible plots/subplots/twists/climaxes/etc.

This is my first attempt at writing a novel, and I just have to laugh at myself, because, unless it has been for a class assignment, I have never gotten past the first 5 pages of any short story that I attempt.  In fact, I’m pretty darn sure I’ve only reached the 5 page mark once…  Every other story that has attempted to wrestle itself out of my brain has died a death from simple neglect before it hit the end of page one.  I’d really just love to write a  full length novel one day… just to be able to be proud of myself for doing it… even if no publishing firm dare publish it… whatever.. :-D

I’m deciding if I should attempt something in the romance genre, or if I should take a shot at the chick lit genre.  Hmm… late at night when littleQ is asleep already, I relax with a nice romance novel, preferably historical… so that might be the keeper for me.  But… it’s not as if I haven’t read and enjoyed chick lit., I just have an oh-so-soft spot in the depths of my mushy soul for historical romance.  If I was given the choice between a library full of paperbacks featuring bare-chested Mr.Darcy’s holding their respective Janes in a sensual but (surely scandalous!) manner, or a truckload of sassy titled novels with photos or vector cartoons of their sexy/chic, inner-strength-filled heroines on the covers, I would definitely choose the former.  (The former being romance, historical preferably, if you didn’t catch that ;-))

However if I do eventually go with romance, what I write will not be historical romance.  It may be modern romance, paranormal romance, or even fantasy/sci-fi romance.. but what I end up writing will not be historical romance.  I just don’t think I have the resources at hand, or the time, to accurately portray a period setting.  I always love how authors are able to interweave bits and pieces of actual political and social movements and events into their stories and characters!

The first meet up for NYC area participants was yesterday, but alas, I was unable to make it :(

Well, is anyone else participating?  Let me know!

NaNoWriMo 2007

877271_pencil I am going to participate in NaNoWriMo this year. Head over to the website to sign up. If you’re not familiar with what NaNoWriMo is, let me just give a quick overview:

The month of November is National Novel Writing Month (hence, NaNoWriMo). The object of being a participant is to write a novel of 50,000 (or more, if need be) in one month. Okay, so it’s more like a novella than a novel (NaNoWriMo FAQs refer to it as a “short novel” ^_^), but it’s definitely a tough thing to accomplish in a relatively short time period. Don’t kid yourself!

You can’t actually start writing the novel until Nov. 1st, but you can get started on things like notes, outlines, etc. before then. Don’t cheat! Cheating is crappy! Oh, and if you hit the minimum 50,000 word mark by midnight on Nov. 30th, you win!

Anyone can join and participate, you don’t have to be an aspiring Hemingway or Shakespeare with dreams of being the author of the next big thing on the New York Times bestseller list…. it can be just for your own amusement for the month of November :)
